How to Overcome Self-Hatred and Negative Thoughts

by fitforthesoul in

Hi, m'dear friends!
Let me start off by asking you a {serious} question.
Have you ever considered why it's so dang difficult to overcome negative and self-hating thoughts?

Sure, we can meditate and look at pretty nature all day long and as much as those things do help to ease our confused minds, nothing seems to ever satisfy that strong craving for PEACE.
As I was preparing myself to write an email to the women at my church, it dawned on me (once again) that our negative thoughts don't come to us just because.  I don't think it has anything to do with the fact that "we don't like the way we look" or because our "circumstances are keeping us in a rut", though those are valid concerns for the majority of us.
It all has to do with knowing our identity.  And just how in the world can we know our identity when social media, culture, and life in general keep suggesting that we should be X, Y, and Z?
It is by knowing the One who created us, died, and resurrected for our sins.
I know it's a crazy statement to make and I'm sure many of you will take offense to it.  However, when I know that God loves me so much and calls me royalty, and He not only calls me royalty but gives me the power and grace to overcome myself and the enemy, I have all I need.  It is too much for me not to share when I have this amazing social platform, albeit a humble one.  :)
As I pray and think about the people in my life through the week, I can't help but wonder how things are going with work, school, family, and their (even yours) social aspects of life.  Life sometimes tends to throw a curve ball or two our way, and to top it off, we have a spiritual enemy wreaking havoc in everything that breathes life within us and around us.

My prayer for all of us women, including myself, is to be THAT GROUP of women exuding God's love, grace, and glory like a fragrant aroma, wherever we may go.  But we have to be honest...reaching that "level" of confidence and love takes quite a bit of work on our part!
Christ has died and resurrected for our sins so that we might live eternally, and fortunately He loves us so much that He won't just stop at salvation.  No.  He actually wants to mold us and perfect us more and more into the women He has called us to be, but the one requirement is to walk CLOSE to Him and fend off any distractions--probably one of the hardest things to do in life next to waiting.  And as we become more like-minded with the Lord, being an example of Christ can become so much easier.
1 Peter 2:9 says, "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light."
So let us take this verse to heart, my dear sisters.  As powerless and as defeated we may feel at times, the Lord is declaring these words upon us.
While the enemy and the world may whisper lies and doubts into our minds, we can counteract them by declaring the truth.
  • Are you sure you're God's child? Because you sure are far from perfect.  (our answer: you are a chosen people)
  • You're pretty insignificant and can't make a difference in the church.  (our answer:  you are a royal priesthood)
  • Look at all the mistakes you've made. You finally blew it and there's no sanctifying you!  (our answer:  you are a holy nation)
  • Just look at all the multitudes around you, you're lost in a sea of faces  .  (our answer:  you are God's special possession)
  • There is nothing to be joyful about.  Maybe I'd be happier if __________.  (our answer:  declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light)
Wow.  I believe when we have that kind of God on our side, nothing can stop us from having peace. This verse states exactly who we are...we are precious, loved, and pursued by God Himself.  And when we begin to doubt our worth in the Lord the best thing to do is to call out the truth just as Christ did.
May we be individuals who can surrender everything and anything He asks of us, as we become good examples not of what a "perfect" Christian looks like, but a victorious one...because He doesn't expect perfection from us, just surrender to His leading.
So I realize this is geared towards people who share in the Christian faith, but I wholeheartedly believe that this is available to ANYONE!  Yes, anyone who is willing to accept and follow Christ's leading.  When we begin to know love Himself, we begin to love ourselves and others.  When we know that we are considered royalty in the eyes of the King, it is so much easier to know our identity and value in this world.
I leave you with this not to ruin your day or assume that you don't know these truths, but because it would be selfish of me not to share it with you.  We are all free in our choices, and I'm just here to remind you that you are a loved individual--with God offering you even more blessings than what you could ever imagine.  :)
Have a great day, y'all.
