Why We Strive so Much

by Ellie Betzen | from scratch, mostly in

A little word of encouragement here today.  If you don't know me by now, then let me preface the following by saying that I am truly the most random person (or blogger) ever, haha.  As I always say, all the tangible things we do to be healthy, like exercising and eating well, are crucial to an awesome life!  But what is all that without some soul searching and healing in our inner person, right?

I would like to dissect a little bit into the heart of why in the world we strive so much!!!  I mean, it drives me crazy to see myself strive for things (tangible or abstract) so often, sometimes day after day, minute after minute...And perhaps you feel the same way.

Well, let's just say that my ever racing mind has come to terms with my heart.  Mind, meet heart.  Heart, this is mind.   So nice of you to meet!

Something just clicked.  I often wonder why I find myself striving for more in this life when I know all I need is God--who is LOVE itself.  Sure, I may be a Christ-following gal and we may have differences in our beliefs--perhaps I'm a psycho fanatic to you!  But it's all good.  One thing I know for us is this, though...we all strive!  And why do we strive?  I believe it is because we struggle with our identity, our self worth, and not being able to see eye to eye with God.

So what does it mean to see eye to eye with God, you ask?  It is simply knowing that He loves us so much--beyond our understanding, actually--and wants us to walk in His will.  His will isn't filled with empty promises, nor is it filled with rules and regulations that "try to dampen" our excitement for life, as some believe.  On the contrary, His perfect will is filled with love, hope, peace, joy, and the promise of eternal life.

Ever wonder why we dream to make something BIG out of our lives, bring change to this downward spiraling world, be the most perfect looking person in the room, or be known by others so we can feel the smallest sense of worth?  And by that question I don't mean that it is wrong to dream!  In reality, God wants us to dream big because He's a big God and He has massive shoulders.  But really.  Why all that struggle when we don't even know if plan A&B are supposed to be in our future?  It all comes down to the fact that we constantly try to stuff our void with fleeting things instead of His eternal love.  Take for example, cake (my fave food group).  Let's imagine ourselves in the feast of all feasts where they're offering hors d'ouvres, salad, grilled veggie skewers, top-notch kobe beef, caviar, and cake.  Well, let's also say that we are constantly stuffing our bellies with said cake until we feel like regurgitating all those empty calories, void-of-nutrients, sugar bombed dessert.  Are we even going to notice all those nutritious delicacies I just listed?  Proooobably not.  The same goes for our spirituality.  He wants something better for us, and perhaps something greater than what we ever imagined.

Now, I just want to clarify that I am not trying to condemn anyone, and once again, I apologize if my words seem blunt as I can only do so much with my writing.  But the fact that He really wants the best for you and me lies so heavily in my heart.

So keep seeking Him if you haven't.  Keep pursuing Him if you know Him.  And keep trusting in His promise that when we come to Him in true faith and desperation, He will fill that void. No ifs and buts!  As we draw closer to Him all the purposes in our lives will become clear. Instead of ashes, we will see beauty, my friends.  DO NOT GIVE UP.  The idea of 'striving' in that sense is a good thing.

I know this isn't the typical encouragement you might be hoping for, but love shares truth because truth saves and heals.

I love you friends, and I truly hope for all of us to live fulfilling and joyful lives because true health starts from the inside out.  The road is never easy, but it is always worth it. :)

"All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord stands forever."  -1 Peter 1:24

In what ways do you think you've been striving?  It can be anything, concrete or abstract...
